How Does Your Skin Change from Summer to Autumn?

How Does Your Skin Change from Summer to Autumn?

As the seasons change, our skin often changes with them. The transition from warm summer days to cooler autumn weather introduces lower humidity, colder winds and centrally heated indoor spaces, all of which can leave the skin feeling drier, tighter or more sensitive. Understanding why this happens, and adapting your skincare routine accordingly, can help keep your skin hydrated, comfortable and supported throughout the season.

What Might You Notice and Why?

  • Dryness, tightness or flaking: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, lower temperatures and reduced humidity make it harder for skin to retain moisture.
  • Greater sensitivity or irritation: Cold outdoor air combined with warm, centrally heated rooms can leave skin feeling dry and irritated.
  • More noticeable fine lines: Dry, cold air can make fine lines and wrinkles appear more prominent.
  • Eczema flare-ups: Eczema UK says many people notice their eczema deteriorating with the onset of autumn and winter. Central heating removes moisture from the air, while scratchy seasonal clothing may irritate sensitive skin.
  • Reactions to the indoor environment: Spending more time inside with limited ventilation may increase exposure to mould and house dust mites, which can trigger eczema in susceptible people.

The British Skin Foundation recommends choosing a moisturiser you are comfortable using regularly. It also suggests keeping central heating warm rather than hot and considering a humidifier to add moisture to indoor air. UV exposure remains present during colder months, so sun protection should continue throughout autumn.
